Parent Kissing Baby

Becoming Parents

From the moment you learn you are expecting a baby, many parents to be feel a shift.  A shift in focus, feelings of excitement and anticipation, wonder and imagination as you begin to picture this new little person and the new life you are creating.

We then typically shift into action mode, reading the books, preparing for the birth, preparing the nursery.  And then the baby arrives – and we realise that birth was just the beginning.

The real work starts after.  For many of us, that comes as a total surprise.  If you have already had your baby then you know what I am talking about.

The shift into parenthood can feel destabilising in ways we didn’t see coming, despite thinking we were prepared and ready.  The exhaustion is deeper, the emotions are bigger, relationships feel harder and the person we thought we were feels far away.

Becoming Parents is a live workshop for individuals or couples who are new parents or expecting their first child.

When becoming a parent we can feel overjoyed and full of a love like nothing else.  At the same time many of the parents I support feel off balance, disconnected and disoriented.

For mothers, this season can bring a quiet unravelling as everything shifts at once — who you were, what you need, your body, your identity, your relationships, and your sense of self.

For couples, the shifts can be just as big as the relationship that brought you here is now being asked to hold more than it ever has — less sleep, less space, new roles, unspoken expectations, and two people who are both trying to find their feet at the same time.

This workshop will be your grounding resource.  I hope to support you as you move through this new phase of life, and provide a space where you can recalibrate and ReAlign to yourself and to your partner.

By joining Becoming Parents I expect you will leave feeling a wave of relief - as you learn that you are not alone in what you are feeling; a newfound sense of confidence in yourself and your relationship in navigating this transition; and a sense of feeling grounded, re-centred and reAligned, ready for what comes next.

I created this workshop because despite having lots of knowledge and education around children and development, I was unprepared for the emotional shifts of becoming a mother.  I continue to feel frustrated by the lack of focus on parents themselves and am saddened by consistently meeting parents who feel completely alone.  Here you will not be alone.  Here is an opportunity to put you in focus.

This workshop is for you if you are a new parent or you are a expecting parent.

If you are feeling exhausted or thrown off balance in your new role as a parent, or feeling overwhelmed at the idea of becoming a parent then this program is for you.

If you are hoping to proactively prepare for this monumental transition then this program is also for you.

This is not a birth preparation program and it is not a therapy group.

This is a one off informational workshop where you will receive a wealth of information and resources to support you in your transition to becoming a parent.

The Finer Details:

  • Couples and solo parents welcome.
  • This workshop will not be recorded to protect the privacy of other group members and to allow for questions.  Therefore you will need to attend live.
  • It is preferable that you have your video on to help us feel connected and microphone on mute to limit noise.
  • We love questions either in the chat or by simply coming off mute.
  • You are welcome to share if you like but there is no pressure to share in this workshop.

The developmental stage of becoming a parent is one of the great monumental shifts of a lifetime, yet parents themselves are so often neglected in this transition.

Parents are the foundation for their child and in neglecting the needs of the parent - how they feel, what they think, what they need - we are doing a disservice to the children.

I feel a deep purpose and pull to provide space for parents to explore their becoming in order to build happy, safe, secure homes for our oh so important future generations.

Meet Jess

This workshop is facilitated by experienced Educational and Developmental Psychologist, Jess Perring.

Jess has extensive experience and training in developmental psychology, perinatal mental health, parenting and attachment and has been working with parents and families for over 15 years.

It's as a mum of 3 young children though that helps Jess to deeply understand what it means to become a parent and how hard this transition can be.

"This session truly made my husband and I feel more comfortable about feeling multiple emotions in the lead up to birth and postpartum. We are so grateful that this was available as there are so many classes on understanding child birth but looking after the mind is just as important. Thank you for the great work you do."
